Nestled in the charming town of Kutchan, the Kutchan Museum of Natural History offers an immersive experience that brings together stunning views, informative exhibits, and a journey through time. My adventure began by stepping onto the city map laid out on the floor. As I looked down, I found myself not only gazing at the delightful town of Kutchan but also admiring the grandeur of Mt. Yotei and the Niseko Mountains. The aerial photograph from 2001 acted as a window to the past, enabling me to compare how the landscape has changed over the years, revealing the town’s evolution.
One of the most intriguing attractions in the museum is the exhibit showcasing the wings of a Zero Fighter plane. These wings were used for experimental studies on aircraft ice drifting during World War II. Originally abandoned on the Niseko Annupuri summit and later identified by the Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper in 1990, these wings now find their place in the Kutchan Museum of Natural History since 2004. This exhibit is a poignant reminder of the town’s connection to global history.
A particularly captivating part of the museum transports visitors back in time to explore the genuine home furnishings of Japanese people from past century. Also, I had a chance to explore original Japanese style classroom and learn more about traditional methods of education.
